Posted Date: 10/16/25 (1:21 PM)

FESD Families,
Today, our students participated in The Great American Shakeout! We practiced what to do in case of an earthquake. Students practiced the stop, drop, and hold method (see image below). You can read more about The Great American Shakeout here: https://www.shakeout.org/

We would like to take this opportunity to share some of FESD's emergency preparedness resources with you. Please see the letter below from Superintendent Amy Betts.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. We would like to share how the Fortuna Elementary School District prepares for emergencies and how you can best support us in the event of one occurring.

How We Prepare
Our schools have detailed emergency plans that are created in collaboration with local police, fire, and medical services. These plans are practiced regularly, so staff and students know how to respond in situations such as fires, lockdowns, natural disasters, or medical emergencies. You can review our procedures at fortunaesd.com/safety

Your Role During an Emergency
We know your first instinct may be to come to the school. Please do not come unless instructed. Unexpected arrivals can interfere with emergency efforts and create additional risks.
Instead, please:
● Stay informed through ParentSquare and local news.
● Update contact information so we can reach you quickly.
● Trust our staff. They are trained and prepared to protect your children.
● Follow directions if asked to pick up your child. We will give clear instructions for a safe process.
● Keep phone lines open. Only call if you must share urgent emergency information.
● Avoid posting rumors on social media, as this can cause confusion.

Our Ongoing Commitment
We invest a significant amount of time and resources into ensuring safety. Drills, staff training, and strong partnerships with local agencies help ensure we are prepared. Your patience and cooperation make a big difference in keeping everyone safe. If you have questions, please contact the District Office. Thank you for supporting a safe school community for all.

Sincerely,
Amy Betts FESD Superintendent
