A Message From our Principal

October 1, 2024

Dear Walker Families:

Six weeks have flown by already and the students have settled in well. Thank you for getting your children to school on time and for moving through the drop-off and pick-up line so smoothly!

Picture Day is this Wednesday.  You can order pictures online (which the photographers prefer) or send money and orders to school. Don’t forget to include tax.

Also on Wednesday, please join us for English Learner Family Night in the Walker cafeteria from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Come and hear about our English Language Development Programs, the Family Resource Center, and Fortuna Library programs.

The Walker spirit wear orders are due this Friday. It builds our sense of community when everyone wears their Star shirts to school on Fridays. If you have any questions, please call the office.

I would like to extend a big thank you to Nicole Pavloff, Elaina Bell, Miranda Savage, Brenda Arce, and Ashley Tovar for serving on the Walker School Site Council - and thank you, everyone, for voting for them! We had our first meeting on September 18th, and the next one will be on October 16th.

If you will be sending treats to school for birthdays or parties, contact the teachers first. They will let you know what time of the day is best and if there are any food allergies in the classroom. While flowers and balloons are lovely, we ask you to save them until after school. They are distracting in the classrooms and for bus drivers.

As far as classroom snacks go, the teachers are always grateful for donations. Please choose healthy options - we do not consider Takis, Cheetos, cookies, or candies as nutritionally valuable! We also ask that you do not send sports drinks with your child either. Water bottles are just fine.

An exciting event for us this month is a visit from author, Natasha Wing, for the Humboldt County Author’s Festival. The students will be hearing her stories in the library in preparation.

Thank you for the great attendance at Lunch in the Courtyard. The next one is on Thursday, October 24th. The schedule is as follows:

TK/K: 10:40-11:00

1st Grade: 11:00-11:20

2nd Grade: 11:30-11:50

3rd Grade 11:50-12:10

4th Grade: 12:10-12:30

October 24th:   Lunch in the Courtyard

Sincerely,

Helen Nelson
