Dear FESD Families,

We want to make you aware of recent updates regarding the use of motorized scooters, e-bikes, mopeds, and similar devices. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has shared updated guidelines, and we are responsible for ensuring that our campuses remain safe and in compliance with the law.

Because many of these devices require riders to be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s license, students are not permitted to ride or bring motorized scooters, e-bikes, mopeds, or pocket bikes to any of our school campuses. If a student arrives at school on one of these devices, staff will secure it and contact a parent or guardian to arrange for pick-up.

CHP Safety Guidelines

All Motorized Scooters & E-bikes:

  • Rider must have a driver’s license or permit
  • Helmet required if under 18
  • Must follow all traffic laws
  • Riding on sidewalks is not allowed

Additional Requirements by Device Type:

  • Motorized Bicycles/Mopeds: Motorcycle license and DOT-approved helmet required
  • Lower-Power E-bikes: Rider must be at least 16 years old
  • Pocket Bikes: Use restricted to private property (not permitted on school grounds, streets, or sidewalks)

Our goal is to keep all students safe on the way to and from school. For more detailed information, please visit the CHP Programs & Services page and see the attached flyer provided by the CHP.

Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in supporting safe travel for all of our students.

Sincerely,
